In the multilayered pyramid of the Italian wine denominations, there is one denomination that sits at the pointed peak: the DOCG, denominazione di origine controllata e garantita. Italian for denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin, to earn the little DOCG sticker from the Italian government, a winemaker must craft their wines not only within specificied geographic locations, but also according to strict guidelines that can vary from aging times and methods to vine output or vineyard density.

For this reason, DOCG wines are often considered the pinnacle of Italian wine quality. Today, we have complied three amazing red wines, all with DOCG status. It is a great way to taste a bit of Italian wine, from all different grapes. A Nebbiolo to make Barolo, a Sangiovese to make Brunello, and a Barbera to make a Nizza.
